The Minchen Gear team has already applied its gear technology extensively in the outboard motor industry – for drive shafts, gear housings and reversing gears.
Outboard motors must reliably transfer engine power to the propeller under conditions that differ fundamentally from land-based applications: saltwater corrosion, constant vibration and fluctuating loads caused by waves. The bevel gear set in the lower unit redirects power by 90 degrees from the vertical drive shaft to the horizontal propeller shaft, while also providing forward, reverse and neutral functions.
